Protecting Our Democracy

I’m Karen Showalter – and I’m a candidate for Black Hawk County Auditor.

I am currently County Elections Manager, and I’m running to succeed my boss, County Auditor and Commissioner of Elections Grant Veeder, who is retiring at the end of this year.

Exercising the right to vote is a fundamental right and a core belief of mine.  It is how we have a say on issues that matter to us.  It gives us a choice in who represents us.

I remember casting my first vote.  It was exciting, it was empowering, and it was a very positive experience.  I was 18 and voting in my first presidential election on my college campus.  Since then, in one form or another, I have been encouraging others to vote.

“I have encouraged Karen to run. She is a leader in the state in election administration, which is a very important duty of the Auditor’s Office. She knows the office well and she knows the county well, and I think she will be an outstanding county auditor.”

-Grant Veeder, Black Hawk County Auditor

WHY I’M RUNNING

1.       Voting matters. Don’t let others decide for you – you can make a difference, and help make positive change, by voting.

2.       Protecting our democracy.  We need to protect the right to vote for all Black Hawk County voters, not just a few.

3.       Trust in our elections.  The election process should be transparent.  I want to educate the public to better understand the steps, like post-election audits, that insure the integrity of our elections.

4.        Strengthening our community through public service.  We recruit your friends and neighbors to be poll workers.  Maybe you would be interested too.

5.       Being a good steward of taxpayer dollars.  The auditor prepares and pays the bills approved by the Board of Supervisors, along with calculating property taxes and other duties.
